Most students start their first year of college at the age of 18. This means that when your child packs up and moves to their college campus, they are legal adults. Parents of adult children attending college may not legally make decisions for their child.
If you get a call that something has happened to your child and they are currently in the hospital, you are not allowed to receive any information over the phone because of the HIPAA law and because your child is now an adult.
If your child should name you as a healthcare power of attorney or add you to a HIPAA Authorization form, you will be able to know details if they are in an accident and cannot call you themselves.
