Choosing a nursing home for an elderly parent is something you hope you never have to do. Unfortunately, there could come a point when you need to make this difficult decision.
Not only is it difficult because you don’t want to move your parent into a nursing home, but it’s also a challenge because there are so many facilities to choose from.
On the plus side, there are steps you can take to make a confident decision. And this starts with asking and answering the following questions:
- What’s most important to you and your parent in a nursing home?
- How does your parent plan on paying for nursing home care, and will this affect your decision?
- Which nursing home facilities in your area have the best reputation for providing a safe and secure atmosphere for its residents?
- Do you know anyone who has helped move a parent into a nursing home in the past?
- Have you taken the time to visit several nursing home facilities to learn more about what they offer?
By answering these questions, you’ll come to find yourself in a better position to make an informed and confident decision.
If you don’t do this, you could find yourself making a rash decision that you’re not comfortable with. And when that happens, it’s a challenge to get on board with the idea that your parent will be living permanently in the facility.
Tip: if possible, include your parent in the discussion about which nursing home is best for them. This makes it easier for them to get on board with the transition, as it doesn’t feel like you’re making all the decisions on their behalf.
