In New Jersey, the Inheritance Tax only comes into play for certain heirs. If you leave your assets to a close relative, such as a child or parent, they will not have to pay the inheritance tax. However, if the state doesn’t consider you a close relative, such as if you are a friend of the person, you are required to pay an inheritance tax that starts at 11 percent.
