Plan in Advance to Take Your Pet on Vacation

April 27, 2018 by Roger Levine, Estate Planning Attorney

petWith vacation season upon us, now is the time to find a destination and look forward to hitting the road.

Like many, you may have the desire to travel with your pet. This is not always the easiest thing to do, but it can be quite a bit of fun if you take the right approach.

Vacationing with your pet takes a bit of planning. If you neglect to do so, you could find yourself far away from home and facing a situation that you are not comfortable with.

First and foremost, be sure to search for a pet friendly destination. It goes without saying that some cities are pet friendly while others don’t fit this mold.

One of the biggest challenges is finding accommodations that allow pets. This is particularly true if you are traveling with a large breed dog, as many hotels do not allow these types of animals on their property.

Tip: once you find a hotel that allows pets, tell them in advance that you want an “out of the way” room. This will ensure that hallway noise is kept to a minimum, which goes a long way in making it easier for your pet to rest (and not disturb others).

A recent article in the Vineland Daily Journal detailed the ins and outs of vacationing with pets, including what you should and should not be doing.

Here is an excerpt that you may find interesting:

“The restaurants were fantastic and, except for a couple of dinners, the dogs were able to join us on patio dining areas. Without exception, the wait staff brought the dogs bowls of water and were eager to fuss over their fuzzy patrons.”

You shouldn’t expect this out of every restaurant, but depending on the destination, you may find several establishments that are more than willing to accommodate your pet. How cool is that?

Other Tips to Follow

Along with the above, there are several other tips you can follow to make for the perfect vacation with your pet. Consider the following:

  • Take everything you may need. Even if you don’t think you will need it, you never know what will come up. It’s better to be safe than sorry. The last thing you want is to find yourself scrambling to find an essential item for your pet.
  • Plan for emergencies. For example, you want to know where the closest animal hospital is located. It’s not likely that you will visit, but it’s good to know where to go if something bad happens.
  • Plan for the heat. Most people vacation in warm destinations. While this may be good for you, it’s not something that your pet will necessarily love. It is a good idea to plan for the heat. This means taking water with you everywhere you go. It also means taking breaks from time to time.

Once again, these tips prove that you need to plan for anything that could come your way.

We Love Your Pet Too

We know that you like to spend a lot of time with your pet. We also know that you are worried about what would happen to your pet if you were to pass on first.

When it comes to pet planning, don’t let any question linger for too long. It is best to plan for the future today, as this will put your mind at ease.

There is a lot that goes into pet planning, such as questions about who will care for it once you are gone.

With our help, you will never have any concerns about what the future will bring for your pet. We can answer your questions, provide advice, and help you make sound decisions that will put you and your pet in a better place.

When you contact us today, it won’t be long before you know which decisions are best and how to make sure your pet is cared for. Rather than worry about the future, let us step in and be your guide. This ensures that you have a clear mind and a plan that you are comfortable with.
